Understanding Upcoming Dividends & Key Dates
A dividend is a share of profits distributed by a company to its shareholders. When investing in dividend stocks, understanding the timeline and key dates is critical to receiving your payout.
What is an Ex-Dividend Date?
The ex-dividend date (or ex-date) is the cutoff date. You must purchase the shares before the ex-date to be eligible for the upcoming dividend payout. If you buy shares on or after the ex-dividend date, the dividend will go to the seller.
What is Dividend Yield?
Dividend Yield is a financial ratio that shows how much a company pays out in dividends each year relative to its stock price. It is calculated as: (Dividend Per Share / Current Stock Price) × 100.
What is the Record Date?
The Record Date is the date on which a company checks its records to determine who its shareholders are. Under India's T+1 settlement cycle, the ex-dividend date and record date are typically the same or one day apart.
Types of Dividends
Interim Dividend is paid during the financial year before final annual accounts are closed. Final Dividend is declared after the financial year ends at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
